About Course

Course Name: Fundamentals of Statistics
Course Nature: Professional Basic Required Course
Applicable Majors: Economics and Management, Water Conservancy Engineering, Logistics Management, Accounting, Marketing and other majors of Shanxi Water Conservancy Vocational and Technical College

Course Overview

Fundamentals of Statistics is a core foundational professional course designed for higher vocational college students, focusing on cultivating students’ data collection, sorting, analysis and practical application capabilities. Rooted in the vocational education orientation of Shanxi Water Conservancy Vocational and Technical College, this course combines general statistical theories with industry practical scenarios, integrates the application needs of water conservancy engineering, economic management, enterprise operation and other fields, and lays a solid quantitative analysis foundation for students’ subsequent professional course learning, post internship and vocational development.
This course systematically elaborates the basic principles and practical methods of modern statistics, adhering to the vocational education teaching concept of “foundation-oriented, application-focused and competency-driven”. It abandons complex theoretical derivation, highlights practical operation and scenario application, and enables students to master standardized statistical working methods suitable for front-line vocational posts.

Core Course Content

The main teaching contents cover the whole process of statistical work, including basic statistical concepts and terminology, statistical survey design and data collection methods such as census and sampling survey, statistical data sorting, grouping and frequency distribution analysis, as well as the compilation and application of statistical tables and charts. In terms of data analysis, the course focuses on explaining four core statistical indicators: total quantity indicators, relative indicators, average indicators and variation indicators, and systematically teaches time series analysis, statistical index analysis, factor analysis and basic correlation and regression analysis. Combined with vocational post characteristics, it adds practical cases of statistical analysis in water conservancy project data, enterprise economic operation, market data monitoring and other scenarios to realize the integration of theory and professional practice.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand the basic principles and research methods of statistics, master standard procedures and professional skills of statistical work. Specifically, students can independently design simple statistical survey schemes and questionnaires, scientifically sort and display various professional data, accurately calculate common statistical indicators, and conduct basic quantitative analysis and data interpretation for practical problems in water conservancy engineering, enterprise management, market operation and other fields. Meanwhile, it cultivates students’ rigorous data thinking, objective analysis ability and practical problem-solving ability, helps students form standardized statistical work literacy, and provides important support for students’ participation in statistical vocational qualification examinations, professional post internship and long-term career development.

Teaching Features

Combining the school’s water conservancy industry characteristics and higher vocational talent training goals, the course adopts task-driven and case-based teaching methods. It takes real post statistical work scenarios as the carrier, integrates industry practical cases into classroom teaching, emphasizes hands-on operation and practical training assessment, weakens theoretical memorization, and focuses on cultivating students’ post-adaptive statistical application capabilities, realizing the seamless connection between classroom teaching and vocational post requirements.
